🧠Lecture: "How and Why Soap Works"
🎙️ Speaker: Dr. Julian R. Silverman
For centuries, soap has been essential to global health and hygiene, yet few understand the science behind its cleaning power. Join us for a fascinating evening as Dr. Julian R. Silverman uncovers how soap really works—at the molecular level.
This talk will explore the chemistry and materials science of soap, revealing how it removes dirt and bacteria while dispelling popular myths and scams like so‑called “weight-loss” soaps. You’ll also learn about soap’s rich history and its wide-ranging impact on medicine, toxicology, and sustainability.
Dr. Silverman is an Assistant Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he teaches cosmetic chemistry. His research focuses on turning waste materials into high-value consumer products, including transforming used cooking oils into soap. His first book, How and Why Soap Works, expands on these topics with thirty hands-on experiments you can try at home.
Come discover how this everyday substance is both a powerful chemical tool and a cultural force that shapes our lives. Get a drink, connect, and learn at Lectures on Tap! 🙌
