🧠Lecture: "From Monet to Picasso: The Chemistry of Color in Art"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Chris Eckdahl
Join us for a colorful evening as Dr. Chris Eckdahl reveals the science behind some of the world’s most iconic artworks. Using paintings by Monet, Picasso, and others, he will unpack the physical, chemical, and biological processes that shape how we see color.
Why are some compounds brilliantly colorful while others appear dull or colorless? How do our eyes and brain work together to perceive a vivid canvas? And how do chemists design and characterize new colorful compounds that fuel modern technologies, from screens to sensors?
You’ll come away with a fresh lens for appreciating art—seeing each brushstroke not only as aesthetic expression, but as a fascinating interplay of light, molecules, and perception.
Dr. Chris Eckdahl is a Lecturer in Chemistry at Columbia University, where he teaches General and Organic Chemistry using active learning to make complex ideas accessible and engaging. He earned his PhD from Northwestern University synthesizing molecules that interact with light in novel ways, and his current research focuses on Chemistry Education and alternative grading.
