🧠Lecture: From Monet to Picasso: The Chemistry of Color in Art
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Chris Eckdahl
Join us for a colorful evening as Dr. Chris Eckdahl reveals the hidden chemistry behind some of the world’s most iconic artworks. Using masterpieces from Monet, Picasso, and others, this lecture will explore the physical, chemical, and biological processes that shape how we see color.
Why are some compounds vibrant while others are invisible to our eyes? How do our eyes and brain work together to perceive color? How do chemists design and characterize new colorful molecules, and how do these discoveries drive modern technologies?
You’ll walk away with a fresh perspective on famous paintings, seeing them not just as works of art but as elegant experiments in light and matter—viewed through the eyes of a chemist.
Dr. Chris Eckdahl is a Lecturer in Chemistry at Columbia University, where he teaches General and Organic Chemistry and is dedicated to making chemistry accessible and engaging through active learning. He earned his PhD from Northwestern University studying molecules that interact with light in novel ways, and his current research focuses on Chemistry Education and alternative grading.
