🧠Lecture: "City of Stars: Our Milky Way Home"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Jay White
Join us for an illuminating evening as astrophysicist Dr. Jay White guides us through our “city of stars” — the Milky Way Galaxy we call home. Inspired in part by the film La La Land, this lecture explores humanity’s long search for its place beneath the night sky, from early star maps to the modern realization that our Sun lives in a quiet, “rural” suburb far from the Galaxy’s center.
Dr. White will trace how generations of astronomers slowly uncovered the true structure of the Milky Way and how each discovery has reshaped our cosmic address, revealing the Galaxy itself as just one luminous thread in the grand architecture of the universe.
Director of the Talcott Mountain Research Institute and Resident Lecturer for Lectures on Tap in Manhattan, Dr. White is known for blending science, storytelling, and the occasional cosmic metaphor from jazz, cooking, and math.
Come for the galaxy, stay for the perspective: in a city of millions of lights, remember we’re all living inside one very large, very beautiful one.
