🧠Lecture: "Borders, Margins, and Identity: Art on the Edges"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Ilk Yasha
Join us for an evening exploring how borders do far more than mark lines on maps. In this transdisciplinary talk, independent curator and educator Dr. Ilk Yasha examines how geographic, cultural, and symbolic borders shape identity, belonging, language, and who gets to be seen and heard.
Bringing contemporary art into conversation with critical theory, the lecture will draw on thinkers such as Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Judith Butler, and artists like Guillermo Gómez-Peña, to consider how borders are produced, enforced, and resisted. Together, we’ll look at how art engages questions of visibility, marginality, and how power determines who gets to speak, move, and belong.
Dr. Yasha is an educator and facilitator at New York University and the Studio Museum in Harlem, dedicated to supporting and developing leaders in the arts and museum sectors, particularly those from historically marginalized backgrounds. He has worked with leading New York City institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, Pioneer Works, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Museum of the City of New York, and Brooklyn Historical Society.
