🧠Lecture: “Bat Genomes and their Superpowers”
🎤 Speaker: Joseph “Joey” Curti, Ph.D.
Bats can live up to 30 years, rarely develop cancer, and navigate the night by “seeing” with sound. Some species can even fly nearly 1,000 km in a single year. In this lecture, we’ll dive into the extraordinary biology behind these superpowers and what they mean for ecosystems—and for us.
Joey Curti, Ph.D. (he/they), is a postdoctoral research fellow at the UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science. Their current research investigates how human-driven environmental change shapes bat communities in urban areas across California, drawing on cutting-edge ecology and genomics. Joey has been working with bats since 2015, collaborating with statewide resource managers and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on conservation genomics projects, including a range-wide study of the Yuma myotis bat.
Joey also regularly leads acoustic bat walks and teaches bat ecology and natural history to groups across Los Angeles.
