🧠Lecture: "Art in the Age of Surveillance"
🎙️ Speaker: Dr. Ilk Yasha
From CCTV cameras and facial recognition to social media and self-tracking, surveillance is woven into everyday life. In this thought-provoking lecture, independent curator and educator Dr. Ilk Yasha explores how contemporary artists are responding to a world where being watched has become both normal and invisible.
Through works by artists such as Hito Steyerl, Simone Browne, American Artist, and others, we’ll uncover the hidden systems behind data collection, policing, and digital existence. Dr. Yasha will highlight how artists use strategies like opacity, misdirection, and counter-surveillance to push back against technologies that monitor our bodies and behaviors.
By examining these works together, the talk asks how art can help us see—and question—the infrastructures of power that quietly shape daily life.
Dr. Ilk Yasha is an independent curator, educator, and transdisciplinary facilitator currently associated with New York University and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He is dedicated to mentoring arts and cultural leaders from historically underrepresented backgrounds, fostering a more inclusive and equitable art world.
