In this engaging talk, experimental astrophysicist Dr. Julie Rolla will compare Apollo and Artemis through their mission goals, trajectories, and technological innovations, and explore why a long-term human presence on and around the Moon matters. She will discuss how renewed lunar exploration could reveal new insights into the history of the solar system, expand opportunities for heliophysics and lunar science, and drive the development of technologies needed to live and work in extreme environments—on the Moon and beyond.
Dr. Rolla’s work spans ultra-high energy neutrinos, dark matter, and computational physics, with a growing focus on Earth and planetary science and the use of satellite data to support communities and disaster response. She is passionate about making complex science accessible and meaningful.
