🧠Lecture: "Antarctica: Governance, Penguins, and Politics Explained"
🎤 Speaker: Marine Biologist, Ally Kristan
Ever wondered about the icy, mysterious continent at the bottom of our planet? What’s really going on down there—and who’s in charge? Join us for a fascinating evening as Antarctic policy analyst and marine biologist Ally Kristan unpacks the complex world of Antarctic governance, wildlife, and geopolitics.
Ally will explain how Antarctica is managed through international agreements, what role the United States plays, and what’s behind the recent boom in tourism. She’ll tackle common myths, including whether the Antarctic Treaty is really about to expire, and share what current science tells us about the health of penguins, seals, and other wildlife in a rapidly changing climate.
With a decade of experience in Antarctic science and conservation, Ally has authored multiple scientific publications on Antarctic penguins and seals, served on the U.S. Delegation to the Antarctic Treaty Meeting, and deployed to McMurdo Station. She has appeared as an “Antarctic Expert” with NPR, Hakai Magazine, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s “Expert is In” program.
