🧠Lecture: "A Brief History of Extraterrestrial Abductions"
🎤 Speaker: Dr. Lois Rosson
Join us for a captivating evening as historian of science and technology Dr. Lois Rosson explores the strange, influential world of UFO abduction stories through the life and work of Budd Hopkins.
In August 1964, Hopkins—then a prominent New York Abstract Expressionist painter—reported a daytime UFO sighting that set him on a radically new path. Over the next five decades, he conducted thousands of interviews with people who claimed to have been abducted by aliens, publishing bestselling books, collaborating with Hollywood, and shaping many of the tropes we now associate with extraterrestrial encounters.
Rather than asking whether aliens are “real,” this lecture examines how the abduction phenomenon sits at the crossroads of the physical sciences, psychiatry, popular media, and American folklore—and what these stories reveal about our cultural anxieties and hopes about life beyond Earth.
Dr. Rosson’s work has been supported by institutions including NASA, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.
