Dr. Lara Medina, a professor in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at California State University, Northridge, will share her reflections as a third generation Chicana profoundly influenced by the work of Amalia Mesa-Bains. Medina, who first Mesa-Bains’s altar-installations in the mid-1970s-80s at the Galería de la Raza in San Francisco’s Mission District, will place Mesa-Baines’s art within the context of that era and the evolution of a Chicana consciousness. Medina’s own scholarly work on the “origins” of altar making within a Chicana indigenous legacy will highlight the historical, spiritual, social, and political significance of altar making and its contemporary manifestations. Medina holds a doctorate in history from the Claremont Graduate University (1998) and a MA in theology from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California (1988). Medina’s research and publications throughout her career have focused on the religious history and spirituality of the Chicana/x population primarily in the Southwest.
