Thursday, April 16, 2026, 6:30pm - Our own Seth Goldstein will present an illustrated lecture, "Mill Creek: Heart of the City." The Mill Creek area of South Portland has a long and interesting past. An important part of our community's early history was the tidal gristmill built in 1727 on the marsh that is today next to the Hannaford parking lot. English settlers brought their corn to be ground into corn flour for a fee paid to the mill owner. In the 19th century, a new dam allowed its owners to flood the land where the park is today and harvest the winter ice. In the early 20th century, the area included Pine Tree Park, considered one of the best baseball fields in Maine at that time; later, it was the site of carnivals and circuses. Our current Mill Creek Park was constructed between 1945 and 1955 on the site of a former city dump.
Admission to the program is free for current members of the South Portland Historical Society; non-members may attend with a $20 donation.
