Tea, coffee and cakes will be provided.The Speaker: Tom Harris is an educator at the Hellenic Museum, specialising in classical languages. He is passionate about making the acquisition of ancient Greek accessible to a large audience.
The Lecture: What does the Arabian empire have to do with the final form of alpha? Why did Christians invent cursive? Throughout the roughly 2,800 years of its history, the Greek alphabet has undergone many changes, and many of these changes are the direct result of major historical events. On its journey, it brought forth the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets, and adapted to new media, from stone inscriptions to papyri, manuscripts, and early printed books. Join Tom Harris from the Hellenic Museum to discover how the Greek alphabet changed across millennia, how to decipher its various forms, and what stories wait to be uncovered once those forms are known.
