The Beacon Sloop Club offers in Spring Sailing Class, Wednesdays, April 15 through June 3, 7 to 9 p.m. (8 classes) at the Beacon Sloop Club, 2 Red Flynn Drive, Beacon NY 12508This is a sailing theory class for small boat sailors and people who
want to crew on the Sloop Woody Guthrie. This course is a
classroom experience. The course gives an overview of sailing -upwind sailing, downwind, sailing navigation and charts, safety and emergencies, and weather, tides and currents. Instructors share knowledge tailored to the challenges of sailing on the Hudson River, Weather permitting, the class culminates with a sail on the Sloop Woody Guthrie and dockside instruction focused on small boats and the Beacon Harbor. The course is predominantly geared to adult learners, but may be appropriate for teens and tweens with a parent or other adult buddy participating with
them.
This year's instructors feature captains and crew of the Sloop Woody Guthrie, including Andy Fairbanks, Tom LaBarr, Corinne Leloup, James Malchow, Ben Mazer, Metal, and Steve Schwartz.
The course is only $50 per person for the entire series, and includes the Sailing textbook "Learn Sailing Right--Beginning Sailing" plus other reference and support materials. The club is offering discounts for families sharing the text book and previous class participants who want to refresh their knowledge.
