About this Event
This event is for anyone who wants to learn Hong Kong style mahjong. The class is taught by Jennie Mak (@mahjongunited), a community-based mahjong educator who brings the rich tradition of Hong Kong–style mahjong to Washington, DC. Raised in a mahjong-playing household in Hong Kong, she blends deep knowledge of the game with a passion for teaching, storytelling, and cultural exchange.
As the founder of Mahjong United, Jennie has built dynamic programs across the DMV, creating welcoming spaces where players of all ages and experience levels can learn, play, and engage with the history and culture behind the tiles. Her teaching goes beyond strategy and scoring—it fosters connection, critical thinking, and shared curiosity. Mahjong becomes a lens to explore language, heritage, and tradition.
At Politics and Prose, Jennie leads monthly sessions in the Den café, inviting participants to learn, play, and celebrate mahjong as a living cultural practice—connecting communities, honoring heritage, and inspiring conversation in one of DC’s most vibrant cultural spaces.
