How to improve complex processes and sustain results using the Lean structured problem solving method known as DMAIC

8-day of in-class instruction: May 13 - 16 and June 17 - 20, 2024

The Lean Green Belt Certificate workshop is a deep dive into the Lean structured problem solving method known as DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve) for government and knowledge workers. Participants learn how to facilitate improvement projects and get results by applying the concepts to two "live" processes: one from a Green Belt sponsor organization (8 days, in-class group project) and one from their own organization (8 days, individual project). In total, achieving a Lean Green Belt certificate requires approximately 16 days of hands-on effort spread over a 3 - 5 month period.

Typically, the individual project (after implementation) will create annual time savings to more than offset the time you invest in the program. For example, if the program and assignment require 16 days of the participant's time, then improvement solutions should save 32 days per year on an ongoing basis.

Employees of organizations who want to develop in-house capability to lead (facilitate) and sustain one or more process improvement projects and/or are embarking on a large-scale Lean transformation

Introduction to Lean as it applies to knowledge work
How to identify and eliminate interruptions to flow and waste (the 8 Lean Wastes)
Introduction to the DMAIC 5-step approach to process improvement
- DEFINE (current situation, target situation, problem statements, objectives)
- MEASURE (conducting interviews, collecting process data, value stream mapping, find possible causes)
- ANALYZE (data analysis to find and prioritize root causes)
- IMPROVE (identify, prioritize, plan, test and implement solutions)
- CONTROL/CONTINUE (visual management, report-out meetings, error-proofing, standard work, visual work instructions)
Change management techniques (creating buy-in, execution planning, common people challenges and solutions, facilitation skills)
