About this Event

Layl w' Nhar (day & night) is an intimate two day cultural program taking place on August 11 and 12 at DAYMI in Toronto. Featured will be a wonderful lineup of facilitators and artists, including three ticketed workshops and two social nights with free entry. 20% of all ticket sales will be donated to trusted sources in Gaza.

Sunday, August 11

? Processing Crisis through Food Archiving: A Sensory Experience (4:30 - 6:00 PM) | $22

A workshop guided by Salma from Sufra Archive. Salma Serry a food history researcher, filmmaker, and a graduate student in History at the University of Toronto. She founded Sufra Archive, a digital archive and social media platform dedicated to West Asian and North African food history and culture. In this workshop, participants will engage in designing and creating a communal multi-sensory experience using archival materials on food and Palestinian resistance, as well as objects, ingredients, and personal reflections inspired by these archival materials. Materials from Sufra Archive’s collection has been gathered with the support of AFAC research on Palestinian Nakba and Intifida oral history was initiated with the curatorial support of Supermelon Collective.

Monday, August 12

Sip & Ceramic: A Coffee Reading and Finjan Painting Workshop (10:30 AM - 2 PM) | $22

Join us for a unique blend of creativity, culture, and community at our Sip & Ceramic morning program, featuring the mystical art of Turkish coffee readings by Salar and an engaging ceramic painting workshop with Tamara.

Salar, the founder of Mystic Brew Readings, brings a rich heritage and intuitive insights to each reading. Participants will enjoy a freshly brewed cup of Turkish coffee, with Salar interpreting the unique patterns formed by the grounds to offer clarity, comfort, and guidance. Each reading provides profound insights, helping attendees navigate their personal journeys.

In the ceramic painting workshop, led by the talented Tamara “Solem” Al-Issa, participants will have the opportunity to paint and personalize their own Arabic coffee cups. Tamara, a Syrian/Filipina sculptural artist, draws inspiration from the architecture and practices of SWANA and Southeast Asia. Her unstructured and freeform practice allows for a creative and expressive experience. Each participant will receive an Arabic coffee cup and a selection of underglaze colors to create a unique, functional, and dishwasher-safe piece. Completed cups will be fired and ready for pickup at Daymi within a week. Materials included, just show up!

? Tatreez Workshop and Tea (2:30 PM - 5:00 PM) | $22

A meaningful Tatreez workshop by Razan Samara from Furdose. Furdose is a Palestinian art resistance collective inspired by the Palestinian will to return and anti-colonial demands. Razan Samara is a dedicated community worker, researcher, and tatreez educator deeply engaged with the craft since 2020.

During the workshop, Razan will introduce the fallahi stitch technique, allowing participants to stitch symbols of Palestinian agriculture while discussing the role of food in the liberation movement. The schedule includes storytelling and intentions while sipping on tea, a fallahi stitch tutorial, and tatreez-ing and conversations. All materials provided. Join us for a day of cultural expression and solidarity!

Enjoy another delightful social gathering with us the following day! Join in for an evening filled with music, engaging games of tawleh and shaddeh, and delicious bites and beverages by Daymi. It's the perfect opportunity to connect with friends, make new ones, and celebrate our vibrant community. Let’s come together once more for a night of fun, laughter, and cultural richness!
