Lavani is a genre of music popular in Maharashtra. It is a combination of traditional songs and dance, which is particularly performed to the beats of Dholki, a percussion instrument. It is popular for its powerful and energetic rhythm.
This art has contributed substantially to the development of Marathi Folk theatre. In Maharashtra and in Southern Madhya Pradesh, it is performed by the female performers wearing nine-yard-long sarees popularly known as Navavari Saree.
