“I think women should be seen and not heard do you agree?” She smiles. “That’s absolutely what I’d like to be!”
Laura Bates is not only a brilliant writer but also one of the UK's most prominent feminist campaigners. She founded the Everyday Sexism Project, a movement that made the rise of sexual abuse impossible to ignore. The short extract above is from her latest book, The New Age of Sexism, a shocking, fact-filled journey into the terrifying future that may lie ahead if technology continues to advance without robust regulation.
The extract above is taken from one of Laura's interactions with a so-called 'AI girlfriend', one of many terrifying chapters detailing how advances in robotics and AI are being used to create hyper-real, misogynistic sexual experiences. Sadly, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Laura will join us to discuss the utterly frightening world we are sleepwalking into. Deepfakes, school girl sex robots, VR harassment and AI girlfriends. We urge you to come. Whatever you know already, it is vastly worse than you think.
But there is hope. From regulatory frameworks to feminist AI tools and the potential to use our collective voice to demand change: welcome to the fight back!
