About this Event
It's that time again! Issue Three of Strange Matters is chock-full of amazing work by a diverse and interdisciplinary crew of writers spread across the world. Without having set out to, we've just dropped what almost amounts to the Tech Issue, featuring: a philosophical editorial that explores the history and problems of technology under capitalism, a peek into the squabbles of the fascist "thought leaders" funded by the lords of Silicon Valley, the sad tale of how venture capital devoured the blockchain socialists, a manifesto for looking at the global economy through a socio-material lens, how the face of an unknown drowned girl shaped modernist art and the science of resuscitation, and even some poems in the voice of ChatGPT. But don't be deceived: in Issue Three you can also read about how communists should destroy the art market to set artists free, a short story about a South Carolina woman left behind alongside the rest of her exurban community, and the definitive spoof of the trend in book titles you never knew you hated until now. Our little magazine has an enormous range. And we work hard to stick to our values: we're run democratically as a worker cooperative, and we're dedicated to paying all our writers above market-rate for magazines of our size.
To celebrate the launch of our third issue -- and raise some cash for the next one -- we want to invite you to an evening of celebration and delight at a beautiful rooftop venue in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. There'll be plenty of booze and other refreshing drinks, homemade snacks to munch on, hand-picked music to create the necessary cocktail party vibes, and an assortment of brilliant and interesting people to chat with from the worlds of culture, art, philosophy, politics, and science who make up the emerging Strange Matters extended community.
If you care about thinking new thoughts and undertaking new projects that break the stagnation of today's status quo, it'll be a great evening!
As this is a fundraiser, there will be extra copies of the issue for sale and other opportunities to donate with cash or Venmo at the event. Please consider being extra generous; we're a small team doing this as volunteer work alongside our wage-labor, and it takes a lot of cash to pay writers fairly and distribute a beautiful and professionally produced magazine!
