Launch of Miami MoCAAD's New Interactive Mural & Penalty Kick Soccer Game

Soccer, or futbol, transcends mere sport; it embodies a cultural phenomenon that unites people worldwide in a shared passion. To honor this universal love for the game and celebrate Miami's role as host of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD) proudly announces the unveiling of a groundbreaking mural titled "Overtown Pitch: Game Changers.”

Located at the site of the historic Carver Hotel building, 801 NW 3rd Avenue in Overtown, the mural launch event is set for June 27th, from 6 PM to 8 PM. Attendees will be treated to the activation of an interactive digital penalty kick soccer game and a Creative Conversation with the mural's artist, Stefan Smith, and Curator Donnamarie Baptiste, followed by an opportunity to mix and mingle.

Inspired by the Miami Edison High Girls Soccer Team whose championship victories bring pride and hope, Miami MoCAAD is spearheading a fundraiser benefiting the Little Haiti Football Club / Miami Edison Girls Soccer Team. Most of the Miami Edison team are members of the Little Haiti Football Club, which provides support to more than two hundred girls and boys ages 5 to 19, free of charge.

The "Overtown Pitch: Game Changers" mural is a vibrant tribute to those who have championed change, equality, and inclusivity in soccer. Through an innovative blend of art and technology, the mural features an augmented reality and digital component, inviting viewers to engage in a penalty kick soccer game in the context of the mural are and learn about the artist via augmented reality.

Miami MoCAAD is a tech-forward virtual museum with a mission to discover, commission, collect and preserve the work of the most advanced contemporary artists of the Global African Diaspora and its mother continent Africa. As a museum of the future, MoCAAD will embed technology in exhibitions, programs, and practices, going beyond digital art offerings to explore ways technology can elevate experiences, educate, and reach audiences around the world.

Miami MoCAAD is digital-first. Flexible, nimble, and distributed, it is both deeply rooted in the local Miami context and global in its reach. It meets its audiences where they are, appearing in diverse digital spaces and creative venues, curating exhibitions and experiences that connect local and international audiences with the work of experienced and emerging contemporary artists of the African Diaspora and Africa. It will serve as a bridge between a constellation of different and diverse voices and art venues of Africa and the African Diaspora around the world from the Americas and Caribbean to Africa, and Europe.

The Little Haiti FC is a not-for-profit youth soccer club providing 100% free programming to a diverse population of underserved families from the central Miami neighborhood of Little Haiti and surrounding communities, providing opportunities for young people to participate in competitive club soccer, promoting growth and leadership development regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

Stefan Smith is an artist and muralist based in Miami Beach. With a background in architecture, Stefan's artistic journey began during his time in the Master of Architecture program at FAU. After graduating in 2015, he spent three years working in architecture and design before realizing his true passion lay in art and large-scale murals.

Stefan places a strong emphasis on people in his designs, which often feature foliage, plants, and human figures. Through his murals he hopes to create visually captivating and meaningful images that serve as catalysts for positive change, particularly in underserved communities.
