About this Event
Tragically, most “comedic” advertising is barely funny. Session 2 teaches you how to be HAHA funny - because humor has a learnable, repeatable structure that every writer should learn. And for 25 measly bucks, you really can’t afford not to.
This session has three parts
- The Psychology of Laughter with Jerry Corley
- Using tools from Stand-Up to Write Funnier Ads with Yuriy Mikhalevskiy and David Roth
- How to Think Like a Comedy Director with Christine Lakin
In his Masterclass on comedy, Steve Martin called out Jerry Corley for his encyclopedic knowledge of comedic principles and what makes us laugh. Jerry was a writer on the Tonight Show, wrote the hit film Stretch starring Jessica Alba and Ed Helms, and performs all over the country. He’s teaching The Psychology of Laughter (dog Laughter is a separate course). This guy knows his stuff. Because how can you make people laugh without knowing WHAT makes them laugh?
Next, comedian-advertisers Yuriy Mikhalevskiy and David Roth will teach you how to use the joke structures from stand-up and apply them to writing funny ads. Yuriy has performed at the Comedy Cellar and on shows with comedians like Janeane Garofalo. David most recently worked at Peacock and wrote LOL 101: A Kid’s Guide to Writing Jokes, featured on The Today Show. Together Yuriy and David co-created Interracial Couple in A Cheerios Ad, a music video that won 15 film festivals globally.
Christine Lakin will train you how to direct comedy. Whether it’s a Tiktok video or a million dollar commercial, you’ll be able to contribute on set - by helping direct talent and making sure the written jokes land visually. Christine has directed multiple episodes of The Goldbergs, High School Musical The Musical (The Series), and was landing jokes as a teen on TGIF’s “Step By Step.”
