About this Event
Mission
Latino Book Club engages with Latine and Hispanic literature through vulnerable discussions about our shared cultural experiences, diverse intersectional identities, and builds strong community bonds that foster deeper connections through empathy and understanding.
Community Expectations
- Be present - Show up as your authentic self. Come prepared to listen, share, and foster relevant dialogue.
- Choose kindness - Remember that kindness is contagious. Treat everyone with respect.
- Surrender to vulnerability - Have the courage to connect by sharing personal reflections. Prepare to have deep, meaningful conversations.
- Hold trust sacred - Honor each other by keeping stories private and holding them with reverence.
- Listen con corazón - Make space for everyone to speak. Take time to reflect.
- Embrace diversity - Welcome all lived experiences, perspectives, and stories. Allow new insights to challenge and expand you.
Book
On 2/11 we are discussing One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
On 3/11 we are discussing Blackouts by Justin Torres.
If you are unable to finish the book no te preocupes. As long as you don't mind spoilers, plan to join us anyways!
Trigger Warning
No matter the genre, our discussions can get pesado due to the depth of our Latinidad, intersectional identities, and experiences. Please remember to take care of yourself and reach out for support if you need it. As for potential triggers in the novel, I encourage you to do some personal research to see if there's anything you'd like to avoid - I'd hate to list spoilers!
Location
Locations vary monthly with a strong preference to support local Latine businesses. Check Eventbrite for where the next meeting nos lleva!
RSVP
Seats are very limited so please "bookmark" your seat by obtaining a (free) Eventbrite ticket. At the meeting, the host will check you in using the name you listed.
Language
We speak Spanglish! Our conversations are based in English con un poco de sazón. If you are primarily interested in practicing your Spanish I recommend looking into Club Español Alaska on Instagram @club.espanol.ak or Somos Amigos Spanish Immersion School. Tell them Latino Book Club sent you! :)
Discussion
Come with comments, questions, or quotes to share with the group! Depending on the group size and meeting location we may also break into small groups with a few guided discussion questions. Answering them is optional and meant to inspire connection, not dictate discussion.
Our Next Read
We make our selections two months in advance to give people time to acquire and read the book at a comfortable pace. Members use a private group chat to submit and vote for novels. Selections are posted in the chat, on the event page, and Instagram. Our March 11th discussion will be on Justin Torres' Blackouts.
