About Las Fridas
Las Fridas celebrates Latin American culture and community through art, centering female voices, creativity, and the spirit of Frida Kahlo. The krewe creates vibrant visual experiences using traditional Latin American attire, artistic practices, including visual art, weaving, beadwork, and textile arts.
As a year-round New Orleans krewe, Las Fridas aims to support underrepresented communities through philanthropic initiatives and creative expression—parading as walking art pieces and making appearances throughout the city to uplift and celebrate diverse voices. The krewe is dedicated to building community by making art accessible and inviting all of New Orleans to participate.
Why?
Community Hub: Studio Shakti & Origin Story
Studio Shakti opened in February 2025, when founder Karla Marie (Karlita) Cochran felt called to blend her studio work with her Latin American heritage. The concept of Las Fridas emerged immediately, followed by a year of exploring the Mardi Gras, parade, and krewe community to find the right alignment. That vision came to life with acceptance into the Krewe of Mosaique parade.
The studio is dedicated to making art accessible and creating inclusive spaces where people can gather, share, and celebrate global cultures. Through dance, art workshops, and community events, Studio Shakti highlights Latin American, Spanish, Middle Eastern and North African traditions—embodying a mission to build community through creativity and artistic expression.
Las Fridas will parade as a living work of art, using Studio Shakti as a creative and healing hub where costumes and concepts are developed year-round. Rooted in research that shows crafting together is a powerful way to reduce stress and foster meaningful connection, the krewe invites individuals to contribute to something larger while nurturing themselves.
Founder Quote
“Frida Kahlo has been celebrated in many ways, but I wanted to create something that truly honors the cultural depth and artistic traditions of Latin American heritage and art. Las Fridas is about centering authentic art and culture and celebrating traditions that go back generations. As a proud Latina and artist, I hope to ensure that celebration is rooted in creativity and community.” - Karlita, Founder
