Nelson Díaz-Marcano's novel, Las Borinqueñas, is set in 1950s Puerto Rico, an island undergoing profound political and social changes. While a new US-backed government promises modernity and progress, women's daily lives remain defined by rigid norms, religious expectations, and almost absolute control over their bodies and decisions.
María, Fernanda, Yolanda, Rosa, and Chavela fight for something that seems simple but is revolutionary: the possibility of choosing. Choosing whether to marry or not, whether to be mothers or not, whether to work, love, study, or stay home. At that same historical moment, Dr. Gregory Pincus is on the verge of perfecting what would be heralded as a scientific "miracle": the contraceptive pill. But to achieve this, he needs women willing to participate in preliminary trials.
The novel explores the intersection of science, politics, and power. What for some was a medical breakthrough, for others meant physical risk, exploitation, and silence. Puerto Rican women became the invisible protagonists of an experiment that would change the world.
