Dear Archaeology enthusiasts,We are pleased to announce the third LARS lecture of 2025–2026, to be delivered by Phil Glauberman, next Monday, 9 March at 13:00 in MSI 01.16 (Erasmusplein 2, Leuven). You are warmly invited to travel back with us to the Middle Palaeolithic in the Armenian Highlands, with a focus on the chronological overlap and possible interaction between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, with special attention to Mount Arteni and the Yerevan-1 Cave. Despite the short notice, this is—especially for (aspiring) prehistorians—an excellent reason to set lunch aside for once. Join us and be part of our archaeological and historical community!

Phil Glauberman is a palaeoarchaeologist/anthropologist (BA University of Pittsburgh; MA Leiden University; PhD University of Connecticut) and is affiliated with IPHES (Tarragona), the University of Tübingen, and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. Over the past 25 years, he has conducted fieldwork in North America, Europe, China, and the Armenian Highlands. His research explores Pleistocene human behaviour through lithic artefacts, their contexts, and site formation processes, in relation to palaeoenvironmental fluctuations. After work on the Middle Palaeolithic of Dutch and Belgian Limburg, he now focuses primarily on the Armenian Highlands, where he has (co-)supervised several Lower and Middle Palaeolithic survey and excavation projects. He recently received an ERC Consolidator Grant on the end of the Middle Palaeolithic, the possible regional demise of Neanderthals, and potential interaction with Homo sapiens. He will give a lecture entitled: “Late Pleistocene Hominin Population Dynamics in the Armenian Highlands: Chronology, Paleoenvironment, and Behavior”. This lecture will be held in English.
We hope to see you there!
