About this Event
In this masterclass, we will unlock the secret to taking control of SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) design as part of the wider design of landscape schemes – Landscape-led SuDS.
We will debunk the myths that are commonly used to engineer-out good nature-based SuDS solutions, often leading to deep and unusable ‘end-of-pipe’ SuDS holes that devalue our landscapes. Instead, we’ll explore design approaches that empower us to integrate the flow of rainwater into our design processes.
In practical exercises, we will apply learning around deploying the gamut of nature-based SuDS techniques to contribute positively to both the community and wildlife.
We'll demystify hydraulic engineering to make SuDS more accessible to designers and to enable constructive collaboration with engineers.
Critical technical aspects such as inlets, outlets and flow controls will also be explored, as well as how to choose soils and plants for successful SuDS.
Learning Outcomes
- Gain the confidence to lead the design of SuDS and effectively collaborate with other disciplines so that they are positive, contributory and multifunctional elements in your projects.
- Be able to confidently defend your design ideas and identify flawed thinking.
- Be able to analyse a site to determine the best hydraulic strategies and how these might influence the landscape layout.
- Understand the range of SuDS techniques available and when they are the appropriate solution as well as the technical aspects that make them SuDS-functional such as approaches to inlets, outlets and flow controls.
- Understand the role of soils and plants in SuDS and how this affects our choices.
- Be inspired by the potential of integrating creative SuDS design into your projects to create more climate-resilient and beneficial landscapes for people and wildlife.
This masterclass is open to both LI members and non-members.
CPD
This webinar is accepted as part of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) required to be completed by LI members and is aligned with our competency framework, in particular the competencies of:

Presenters
Kevin Barton
Kevin is an award-winning landscape architect and Fellow of the Landscape Institute who specialises in landscape-led, nature-based SuDS. He delivers leading national SuDS training through CIRIA and through his company’s SuDS Masterclass series, and has co-authored a number of SuDS guidance documents for LPA’s and water companies. His integrated approach to rainwater management balances the functional hydraulic requirements of SuDS with the art of designing dynamic landscapes that benefit communities and wildlife. The result is places that challenge the urban fabric to work much harder to tackle the issues of climate and biodiversity emergencies whilst delivering much-needed co-benefits to our urban landscapes.
Judith Puckmayr
Judith has been working as a Landscape Architect for over 20 years and has led the design and implementation of a number of successful landscape-led and nature-based SuDS schemes within a wide range of sectors such as housing, schools and health care. She has also led a range of high profile SUDS retrofit projects, transforming existing streetscapes, public open spaces, parks and playgrounds into SuDS landscapes that come alive when it rains. She delivers advanced SuDS Design training on behalf of CIRIA, and has delivered bespoke SuDS training to the Transport of London and several local authorities. She is also one of the main trainers for the company's SuDS masterclass series.
