2026 is the 150th anniversary of the Black Hills gold rush and the discovery of the Homestake Mine.
David Wolff is Professor Emeritus from Black Hills State University. He earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Wyoming and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. Wolff has published in South Dakota History, Mining History Journal, and The American Indian Quarterly, and is the author of six books, most recently three volumes in Black Hills History Tours series published by the South Dakota Historical Society Press. Wolff received the Distinguished Faculty Member Award from Black Hills State University in 2010, the Rodman Paul Award for outstanding contributions to mining history from the Mining History Association in 2012, and the Robinson Memorial Award, the state’s highest history honor, from the South Dakota State Historical Society in 2023.
David will give a brief overview of the rush, offering what he calls a gold rush paradigm. He will address the question: what made the Homestake a success? As part of that, he will discuss the company's use and abuse of the forest, which brought Timber Case No. 1.
