Table lamps and hanging “swag lamps” are some of the simplest electrical projects you can undertake, but they can be intimidating because of some of the inherent risks (electricity, and heat management). There are also many, many parts and options that can both make your project easier if you know what they are called and where to find them.In this class you will learn how to repair or create simple lamps (table lamps, or hanging lamps). We will deconstruct an existing lamp to learn how most lamps are assembled, what the parts are called, and how to wire/rewire simple lamps. We’ll talk about switches, cords, bulbs, shades, electricity, and hardware so that you can learn what your options are for custom creations. I’ll provide you with a basic “lamp kit” that contains many of the parts you might need to create a custom lamp of your own.
If you have an item you’d like to integrate into a lamp, or to create a lamp from, bring it to class and we’ll workshop it (we might not finish your lamp, but we’ll develop a plan). If you have a dodgy lamp that you’d like to use safely again, bring it along and we’ll make sure it is safe to use. If you just want to learn the parts and pieces so you can go home and experiment on your own, that is okay too.
