About this Event
The LAI Rare Books Group Summer Visit for 2026 will take place in the National Gallery of Ireland and in the Prints & Drawings department at the National Library of Ireland.
Each year, the LAI Rare Books Group organises a summer visit to libraries and archives around the country. The visit is a great opportunity to learn about collections and services in other institutions. It also provides an opportunity to network and socialise with colleagues, and first-time attendees are always welcome!

The Library of the National Gallery of Ireland holds extensive collections relating to the history of the visual arts, with over 100,000 publications dating from the 15th century to the present. During the visit, the group will view highlights from the Library’s rare book collections, including important art historical texts by Vasari, Alberti, Bellori, Malvasia, Baglione, Ripa and de Piles, many donated by the distinguished scholar Sir Denis Mahon. The visit will also include a brief introduction to the NGI Archive Collections, which preserve records relating to the history of the Gallery, its exhibitions, collections, and key figures in Irish artistic and cultural life.
The National Library of Ireland has over 100,000 prints and drawings, created by hundreds of artists and engravers. They are a fascinating visual record of Ireland from the 17th century to today. The collection includes individual prints, albums, original drawings, watercolours, architectural drawings, portraits and topographical works. Many of the prints and drawings were originally in the library of the Royal Dublin Society or were part of the collection of their first donor, Dr Jaspar Robert Joly.
