ABSTRACT:
In health care services relationship skills such as empathy and compassion are valued by patients. Many studies in health care reflect relationships between care that is empathetic or compassionate and increased patient satisfaction, enhanced quality of information gathered, improved treatment outcomes, and client adherence to recommendations (Bonvicini et al., 2009; Koya et al., 2017; Leach, 2005; Taylor et al., 2019). Relationship skills such as empathy, compassion, and rapport building are critical parts of the skill-repertoire of an effective behavior analyst due to the positive impact on family satisfaction, adherence to treatment, and improved clinical outcomes (Taylor et al., 2018). In a survey of behavior analysts, 72% reported they had not received any formal training in relationship skills (LeBlanc et al., 2020). Research reflects that behavior analysts’ practical skills are fundamental to ensuring positive client outcomes, however these skills do not occur independently from the relationships with clients and their stakeholders. Behavior analysts’ overall competencies are enhanced by direct training in interpersonal skills and strategies for building relationships with their clients and stakeholders (Taylor et al., 2019). Research reports that perceptions of supervisor support and compassion, considerably reduced staff burnout, enhanced clinician well-being, and improved client outcomes (Kristiansen et al., 2025).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will identify one critique in the field of behavioral analysis, pertaining to interpersonal skills and training.
2. Participants will identify four outcomes of compassion-focused care.
3. Participants will provide three examples of compassion-focused strategies that can be utilized during supervision.

ABOUT LABA:
LABA is an organization dedicated to improving cultural, social and ethnic diversity in the field of applied behavior analysis as well as addressing the particular needs of diverse individuals and diverse communities. LABA was formed by three Latino behavior analysts, Ruth Tello-Di Leva, Isaac Bermudez and Jose D Rios, who, combined have worked in the field of behavior analysis for nearly 90 years.
LABA was the first behavior analytic organization formed specifically to address diversity (and the absence of diversity) in our field.
