4K RESTORATIONIn Grand Illusion, World War I becomes a battleground not just of nations, but of class and camaraderie, as French aviators Jean Gabin and aristocratic Pierre Fresnay find themselves in a German POW camp, overseen by noble German officer Erich von Stroheim. Amid daring escape attempts—including a tunnel plan—these men bond with fellow prisoners, from Jewish banker Marcel Dalio to comedic performer Carette. The film, inspired by Renoir’s own wartime experiences, is both a tribute to the brotherhood of man and an elegy for a fading aristocracy. Internationally acclaimed, Grand Illusion was the first foreign film nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, also winning awards at the Venice Film Festival and from the New York Film Critics Circle.
