About this Event
Join us for a Valentine's Day celebration that is the stuff of fantasy, as 7th House and Chloë Cassens of Sacred Monster present LA FÊTE D'AMOUR! — a fairytale themed costume dance party featuring a screening of Jacques Demy's (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) magical, candy-colored, musical fantasy classic DONKEY SKIN (1970) and a French pop set by DJ Lili Bird!
Starring the enchanting Catherine Deneuve and Jean Marais (surrealist Jean Cocteau's lover, muse, and frequent star), with music and songs by Michel Legrand, the film was Demy’s most successful film in France and is now considered a cult classic! Demy's lovingly crafted, wildly eccentric adaptation of a classic French fairy tale Deneuve as a princess who must go into hiding as a scullery maid in order to fend off an unwanted marriage proposal—from her own father, the king (Jean Marais). A topsy-turvy riches-to-rags fable with songs by Michel Legrand, Donkey Skin creates a tactile fantasy world that’s perched on the border between the earnest and the satiric, and features Delphine Seyrig in a delicious supporting role as a fashionable fairy godmother.
Join us in your finest fairytale/fantasy/Ren Faire/ball or Yé-Yé/French Pop attire (or come as you are! Costumes not required!) and after the screening we'll take to the dance floor with a lively set of Gallic grooves courtesy of DJ Lili Bird!
Replete with bar and photobooth, this will be a night of whimsy, wonder, and l'amour to remember and a chance to catch Demy’s delicious pop fantasy confection DONKEY SKIN on the big screen!
Special thanks to Brian Belovarac of Janus Films and Chloe Cassens of Sacred Monster.
