La Dolce Vita: Italian Sweets Workshop with Matt O'Callaghan

We’re thrilled to welcome back Matt O’Callaghan, founder of Mangia! Mangia!, for a unique and immersive Italian sweets workshop at GULP. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced cook, this hands-on class will take you on a delicious journey through the world of Italian confections, using traditional recipes and techniques.
What You’ll Make:
- 🍬 Frutta di Martorana: Hand-paint delicate marzipan fruit, a Sicilian tradition started by nuns to decorate winter trees.
- 🍐 Cotagnata: Cook autumn quinces into cotagnata—beautiful, jewel-like fruit jellies set in antique molds.
- 🍫 Chocolate Salume: A fun and whimsical "salami" made of chocolate and nuts, wrapped like a giant sausage!
What to Expect:
- Location: The workshop is hosted at GULP, a cozy and intimate dining space nestled in a Grade II listed building in the historic Jewellery Quarter. Run by food artist Kaye Winwood, GULP is a one-of-a-kind space for food lovers with a taste for the extraordinary.
- About Matt: Matt O’Callaghan is a Birmingham-based cook, grower, writer, and teacher, specializing in traditional Italian and British recipes. Most of the ingredients he uses come from his own allotment. His food writing has been praised by the likes of Nigella Lawson, Rachel Roddy, and Diana Henry.
- Workshop Cost: £60 per person, including all materials needed to create each recipe. You’ll get to enjoy your creations or gift them to friends and family!
