“La Cocina” captures the intense pace of a bustling Times Square restaurant The Grill. When money mysteriously vanishes from the cash register suspicion quickly falls on Pedro (Raúl Briones) an undocumented cook with dreams of a better life. His relationship with Julia (Rooney Mara) an American waitress battling her own inner conflicts takes a turn when a shocking revelation forces Pedro toward a decision that could bring down the entire restaurant. Blending sharp comedy and poignant drama “La Cocina” captures the invisible lives of the people who keep America’s kitchens running all while exploring the personal and systemic struggles of those in pursuit of the elusive American Dream.
Directed by the acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Alonso Ruizpalacios (Güeros Museo) and starring Rooney Mara (Carol The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Raúl Briones (Narcos: Mexico) “La Cocina” has been described by The Hollywood Reporter as “an explosive account of immigrant restaurant workers chasing the American Dream” and celebrated as “a singular masterwork” by RogerEbert.com. “La Cocina” just won the Audience Award at the renowned Morelia Film Festival.
