About this Event

An evening of poetry in celebration of Susan Suntree’s poetry collection This Time This Place

Join us for a celebratory reading featuring Susan Suntree alongside poets Tom Laichas, Richard Modiano, and Stan Oropesa.

Both meditative and urgently present, This Time This Place offers poems as contemplations of our current moment—works that pause, listen, and open outward. Inspired by the traditions of Bashō and Tu Fu, these poems seek to awaken what is wild, communal, and generous, reminding us of our shared breath within the living world. Published by Shanti Arts, This Time This Place is a quiet, resonant book that invites reflection, attentiveness, and connection.

About the authors

Tom Laichas is author most recently of Three Hundred Streets of Venice California (FutureCycle Press, 2023). His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Mudlark, Prairie Schooner, the Amsterdam Review, The Los Angeles Times, Plume, The Moth (Ireland), The Irish Times, and elsewhere. He lives in Venice, California.

Richard Modiano is a native of Los Angeles. He attended the University of Hawai’i and New York University. In 2001 he was a programmer at Beyond Baroque Literary/Arts Center, joined the Board of Trustees in 2006 and from 2010 to 2019, he served as Executive Director. In that time he produced and curated hundreds of literary events. Richard is a rank and file member of the Industrial Workers of the World. In 2019, he was elected Vice President of the California State Poetry Society, and he was the recipient of the Joe Hill Award for labor poetry in 2022.

Stan Oropesa: Born and raised in Miami, I discovered a very different world in Los Angeles thanks to my father's job reassignment. I later studied English, classics, and philosophy at U C Santa Barbara, ignoring my accordion and resting my fingers for 8 years. A discovery of Glenn Gould playing Bach nudged me back to my instrument and inspired me to transcribe the Baroque masters and a few others onto the one thing I share with Donald Trump...a little organ. According to my teacher, I have also composed far too many pieces of my own. Somebody has to do this!
