Initiated by local GPs wishing to promote wellness/recovery through outdoor activity & social connection, Kōia is a community gardening initiative unique to Taranaki, guided & informed collaboratively with local iwi & healthcare institutions.
Since the successful piloting in 2023-24, Marfell Community Garden has hosted Kōia sessions every Wednesday under the Green Prescription. Referals from healthcare professionals are free, though NOT required for attending this weekly event.
All Kōia sessions are facilitated by our Kaitiaki Dom, and usually attended by a Health Improvement Practitioner (HIP). We advocate a holistic approach to healthy outcomes for our participants, honouring each unique journey of wellbeing as they intersect at Marfell Māra.
THINGS TO KNOW:
- Kōia is FREE & open to the public, regardless of dis/abilities
- While Marfell Māra continually aims to improve mobility pathways, the terrain is varied and additional caution is advised if mobility or vision is impaired.
- Our apologies as yet we have NO toilets on the premises, although we have access to Marfell Community Centre including bathroom/kitchen facilities (approx. 25 metres distance)
- Dom, our Kaitiaki is always there to facilitate inclusion & cohesion, while additional support/supervision should be provided by accompanying carers where needed.
Registration is NOT required, but please contact Dom with any further enquires:
