About this Event
To mark the 51st anniversary of Keith Jarrett’s iconic improvised Köln Concert, internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Dorian Ford recreates and reimagines this remarkable work.
In a career profoundly influenced by Jarrett’s genius, Ford channels the same seamless blend of jazz improvisation and classical discipline. This is not a re-enactment, but a living tribute: Ford weaves passages from Jarrett’s original improvisation with his own spontaneous creation, honouring the spirit of the music while bringing fresh vitality to a timeless masterpiece.
In January 2025, on the exact 50th anniversary of the original concert, Dorian performed Köln Concert 50 in Cologne to a sold-out audience, including people who were present at the 1975 performance. The concert received exceptional acclaim for its emotional depth, authenticity, and originality.
A year on, Köln Concert 51 continues the legacy, carrying the musical journey into its 51st year.
“From the first note, it was clear that Ford was not merely playing the piano; he was telling a story, channelling the spirit of Jarrett while infusing his own unique flair.”

Paula McAdam, Liverpool International Jazz Festival 2025
“It is gratifying to see a pianist of Dorian’s calibre present the heart and soul of the music so eloquently and so authentically.”

The Story Behind the Music
The original Köln Concert, performed by Keith Jarrett at 11:30pm on 24 January 1975, almost never happened. A rehearsal piano had been placed on stage by mistake; it was out of tune, the pedals stuck, and Jarrett—exhausted, in pain, and ready to cancel—had to be persuaded to perform by 17-year-old promoter Vera Brandes.
What followed became musical history: a completely improvised concert that went on to become the bestselling solo piano recording of all time, crossing genres and generations, transforming how the world hears improvised music.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music and twice winner of the Chick Corea Jazz Masters Award, Ford has performed at Ronnie Scott’s, Wigmore Hall, and leading venues around the world. His music has been featured in films, TV and on radio.
