About:
In this workshop, we will be making cups using a traditional Japanese carving technique called Kurinuki. Kurinuki can be translated as “carving out” or “hallowing out.”
We will hollow out a solid block of clay, carve the outside walls, carve out a foot at the base, and refine the rim.
Before delving into carving, it is important for us to share the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. Wabi-Sabi teaches us to find beauty in imperfection and impermanence. It emphasises embracing the unique qualities of hand-made pieces - the irregularities, asymmetry and natural textures that reflect human touch.
We invite you to honor the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi in the creation of your cups. As you carve away, embrace the beauty of imperfection, invite a sense of simplicity, authenticity, and harmony in your work. Understand that if you pursue this work authentically, your creations will be beautiful and perfect.
Embracing wabi-sabi, we celebrate imperfection in each handmade piece. In a world obsessed with flawlessness, we see beauty in irregularity and asymmetry. Our work is to allow the clay to shape itself, turning flaws into testaments of human touch. Each drip of glaze and texture variation will tell a story of authenticity. In this workshop, we invite you to cherish imperfection, finding joy in life's unique charm. It’s not just art but a celebration of life's beauty in all its forms.
Instructors Diana and Darren will take your information and coordinate firing and returning your pieces - you'll get them back in 4-6 weeks.
