About this Event

Nothing beats a home-cooked meal shared with family! And this is what inspires our Family Style Cookery Classes, a fun, laid-back homestyle cooking experience. Here, you will learn to prepare different dishes and then enjoy them with people who, like you, fuel our mission of supporting refugee and migrant chefs on their journey to integration. It’s a cookery class with a conscience, like they say!

Your class will be led by our wonderful Chef Nadereh from Kurdistan, Iran at Appleby Blue Almshouse in London.

At our Family Style Cookery Classes, you will be grouped with other participants and prepare dishes together as a team. Think of Chef Nadereh as the head of the family! She will take care of dividing the class into groups, and each group will be responsible for creating one of the dishes. Of course, you are welcome and encouraged to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes being prepared. Throughout the evening, Chef Nadereh will share stories about their food and culture, and explain how to prepare each of the dishes so you come away with some new cooking tricks and inspiration. You will also be emailed the recipes after the class.

A message from our Chef Nadereh:

“Hi, my name is Nadereh. I was born into a large family in Ilam, an entirely Kurdish city in the west of Iran. Kurdish people are very brave, kind and really generous hosts. They love nature, food, music and dance. I started cooking when I went to university. I wanted to recreate delicious family meals so I would regularly call my mother for instructions. When I got married, I was expected to do all the cooking, as is traditional in Iran, even though I was working and raising a baby! But, I have to say that I love cooking, and it gives me great pleasure to share my food with friends and family. I’m concerned about healthy eating and really don’t like fast food so I make sure that I prepare nutritious food for each meal.

I am proud of my Iranian food heritage. Traditional Iranian recipes are scrumptious and memorable. My menu includes food that you can find all over Iran, as well as Sholeh Maash, a healthy rice dish which is very popular amongst the Kurds. Cooking is my passion and I add this love with spices and fresh ingredients to my food. When I am cooking I listen to music, another of my passions. If you want to experience the taste of love and music, come to my classes!”
