LALISH -Mihrani

55 Minutes

Director: Aso Haji

The Yazidi are Kurds by ethnicity, and their religion, Yazidism, is considered to be the most ancient religion of the Middle East, which is regarded as the cradle of religions. The Yazidi, now a religious minority in their own homeland, have a population of nearly 500,000 living inside Kurdistan. A large number of the Yazidi escaped the repressive policies of the Ottoman State and scattered in the republics of the former Soviet Union. Many more migrated to European countries, particularly to Germany.

The Yazidi are the continuation of Mithraism that emerged at the time of Sumerians. Lalish Temple, nestled between three mountains, is the most sacred place in the world for the followers of Yazidism. It is situated in Iraqi Kurdistan; it is 53 kilometers away from Duhok (most northern province of Iraq) and 10 kilometers from Sheikhan district. According to the Yazidi’s sacred scripture, Lalish was the yeast for the creation of the universe and life. Hence they revert to the oldest mythology about creation.
