How much do you love your homeland? What is it like to grow up in Taiwan, when your powerful neighbour China denies your country's own very right to exist and threatens with random military drills? Do you love it enough so that, as a queer boy, you’d endure the dehumanising military service How much do you love your homeland?
For one night only, London-based Taiwanese stand up comedian Kuan-wen brings his English stand up comedy special "Ilha Formosa" to Luxembourg on May 16th.
The show has been performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in summer 2023 and at the Soho Theatre in London in February. It has also been brought to and performed in Berlin, Prague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Tallinn and Barcelona.
(Le spectacle sera en anglais mais s'il y a des amis francophones, on peut se bavarder et rigoler un peu en français aussi!)
As seen and heard on BBC Radio 4, BBC Three and Comedy Central.
Reviews:
“..it’s not often you get global politics, teddy bears, massive orgies and mummy issues in the same show. And it works, due to our host’s sheer effervescence.” – Fest Mag
“In this debut hour, Ilha Formosa, his likeable bluster is given weight by centring on the complex relationship he has with his home country and its tense political struggles with China.” – The List
“The comic has an incredible database of international relations up his sleeve. It made the digs pack a punch.” – Entertainment Now
Door opens at 7:30pm. Show starts at 8:00pm.
*It is a show I talk about moving from my home country Taiwan to the UK, so there are a lot of cross-cultural observations that I believe fellow expats/immigrants can relate to.
*Being Taiwanese, there are also niche political jokes on Taiwanese people coping with a big neighbour (and occasionally a bully) like China
