About this Event

We're super-psyched for the spring edition of the Kramers Poetry Reading Series! This time around we are featuring two local DMV poets, joined by a special guest from far-afield. Each poet will read from original work for 10-15 minutes each. Their books will be available here, as well.

On top of that, this reading features the--now traditional--seasonally-themed writing contest! The winner of which goes home with a $20 Kramers gift card. So buckle up your blossoms; here we go! Raise your cherry-themed drink to some charmed quatrains and spring-ish sestinas!

Spring's Poets Include:

Joseph Ross is the author of five books of poetry: Crushed & Crowned (2023), Raising King (2020), Ache (2017), Gospel of Dust (2013) and Meeting Bone Man (2012). His poems appear in many publications including The New York Times Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Xavier Review, Poet Lore, Fledgling Rag, The Langston Hughes Review, and the 2022 anthology, WHERE WE STAND: Poems of Black Resilience. He won the 2012 Pratt Library / Little Patuxent Review Prize for his poem “If Mamie Till Was the Mother of God.” He currently serves on the Poetry Board at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. He teaches English to high school students and writes regularly at www.JosephRoss.net.

Caroline Harper New is a poet, artist, and anthropologist from southern Georgia. She is the author of A History of Half-Birds, winner of the 2023 Ballard Spahr Prize for Poetry. Her poetry is rooted in the precarious landscape of the Gulf Coast, where she combines anthropology, history, and scientific discovery to measure the line between love and ruin. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in American Poetry Review, The Cincinnati Review, PRISM International, Bellevue Literary Review, Colorado Review, The Malahat Review, Palette Poetry, and elsewhere. She is winner of the 2022 Love & Eros Prize, 2023 Malahat Open Season Award, 2022 Robert and Adele Schiff Award, and 2022 John & Eileen Allman Prize for Poetry. She holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan, and now lives in Ann Arbor, MI.

Brandon Douglas, a poet/emcee/actor/teaching artist, is a young black man native to Washington DC who uses his art selfishly and selflessly at the same time. Selfish because he uses art to vent and explore personal issues; Selfless because he uses art to share his knowledge and experience as a human being for others to learn from and use. He also believes that everyone has greatness to offer.
