Is food becoming increasingly unaffordable? Is it tiring finding time to cook healthy meals? Are you disappointed with the quality of produce in the grocery stores? Are you feeling lonely and isolated from your neighbours? Are you concerned about climate change but not sure how to help? Are you craving fun and connection? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to come to this event. At Bear Spring Eco Retreat, we believe meaningful change happens best through festival - festival that includes bringing every member of society together in celebration of community, from young children and seniors to artists, teachers and farmers. It is through community connections that we can build healthy, resilient neighbourhoods. We are pooling our resources, sharing our knowledge and entertaining each other while building food sovereignty. Participating in this event is literally living the action required to make our community sustainable. It’s going to be so much fun too. The work we’ll be doing won’t even feel like work at all. This event is an experiment and it’s our wish that this event become a blueprint that can be replicated in communities everywhere. This is your chance to have a hand in creating something new and amazing!
Join the Kootenay Cook Off and participate in canning and cooking workshops with David Havemann (a professional cook and instructor at Selkirk College), make herbal elixers with Althaea Herbals, bake pies with Solita Work (co-owner of Bear Spring Eco Retreat), play team building games (kid friendly), go on plant themed scavenger hunt, swap your excess garden harvest with neighbours, listen to local musicians in the barn (music jam hosted by Moonflower Collective), share food in the giant potluck and compete in our friendly peoples choice taste contest and win prizes.
Final details, including driving directions, will be posted later this week. Suggested ticket price is $20. All proceeds going to cover costs of food and to compensate instructors and musicians. This event is not for profit. Please sign up for workshops on Eventbrite (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kootenay-cook-off-tickets-1004279857087?aff=oddtdtcreator). If you are only attending the food swap and potluck, donate what you can at the gate. Please RSVP as ‘going' on our Facebook event page here so we know how many to be prepared for.
Can’t wait to see you all and share food. It’s going to be a blast!
