The Knoxville Chapter of The Embroiderers’ Guild of America celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a Chapter Needlework Exhibit at the East Tennessee Historical Museum at 601 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville, TN on August 22 and 23 from 10 -5 PM.In addition to the spectacle of extraordinary needlework displayed appropriately in a museum setting, there will be historical photographs and the Knoxville Chapter Charter from 1975. All of the original scrapbooks will be on display to document the success of our stitchers through the years.
In 1976, Knoxville Chapter was invited to decorate a Christmas tree for the local Dulin Gallery of Art and it continued to do so for many years until 1986, when it began participating in Knoxville’s Fantasy of Trees, a charity that supports East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. The long history of Fantasy of Trees support is matched by the Historic Homes and Landmarks project, an ongoing collection of charted needlework patterns that started with the Hopecote Home copyrighted design in 1982 and the Old City Hall in 1986.
Other outreach programs include mentoring Girl Scouts, stitching bookmarks for school children learning to read, and teaching at Senior Centers, all while members continue to develop their stitching skills through the EGA Master Craftsman program. In addition to showcasing the history of the chapter and participation in local events, the 50th Anniversary Exhibit will display needlework from Knoxville Interest Groups with examples of projects from visiting National and International Instructors.
