About this Event
As her farewell offering within the Knitting in Nature series of South DeKalb Parks Naturalist programming, Environmental Educator Zaree Ross invites participants to experience a guided walk that connects fiber arts, bird behavior, and close observation of the landscape. The series will continue in future seasons with rotating Artists-in-Residence who bring their craft into the parks, offering fresh perspectives and shared community experiences.

What to Bring

Recommended Ages
This program is designed for adults and older youth, but all ages are welcome.
What We’ll Do
Participants will move along the accessible trails of Constitution Lakes Park, pausing at key points to explore how birds construct their nests using varied natural materials and how those same principles of texture, structure, color, and pattern show up in traditional fiber arts. Along the way, we’ll listen for birds using the Merlin Bird ID app, observe signs of nest-building in the environment, and reflect on how handmade crafts often mirror the natural systems that inspire them.
The walk concludes with a communal moment near the trailhead for knitting, conversation, and a light pattern/yarn exchange among participants.
Walking Distance / Physical Activity Level
This program includes approximately 1.25–1.5 miles of walking along paved trail, boardwalk, and compacted natural surface. The pace is gentle with planned pauses for observation and discussion. Participants should be comfortable standing and walking for extended periods with intermittent rest points.
