Knitting in Nature

It is an honor to introduce brand-new programming led by Zaree Ross—a rising nature educator whose creativity and curiosity shine through every lesson she prepares. Zaree has served this semester as the GSU Intern within DeKalb County RPCA’s South DeKalb Parks Naturalist (SDPN) Programming, where I have had the joy of mentoring her as she explored the many dimensions of environmental education, community engagement, and nature-based wellness.

This inaugural session of Knitting in Nature reflects the depth of her passion blended with all she has learned throughout her internship. Rooted in the mission and vision of DeKalb County Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs, this program invites participants to slow down, observe deeply, and discover how natural fibers, color, texture, and landscape quietly intertwine. While the full experience will unfold onsite, each element has been intentionally crafted to inspire creativity, connection, and a gentle sense of wonder.

Meet near the parking lot between the playground and tennis courts.

Note: There are no restrooms on site. Please plan accordingly before arrival.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear.
Bring a refillable water bottle and any personal comfort or outdoor items you prefer (e.g., notebook, lightweight seating pad, knitting/crochet project and bag if desired—optional).

This program is designed for adults and older youth, but all ages are welcome.

Participants will take part in a gentle, reflective walk through Glen Emerald Park and the Rock Garden to explore how natural landscapes influence traditional fibers, dyes, patterns, and creative expression. Expect thoughtfully guided prompts, quiet observation moments, and opportunities to notice how the textures and colors of nature echo the materials we work with in handmade arts.

Approximately 1.5–2 miles of slow-paced walking with brief periods of standing and light terrain changes, including lakeside pathways and uneven surfaces in the Rock Garden.
