In Kizomba/Semba, Ginga refers to the natural movement of the body that gives the dance its softness, rhythm, and life. Rather than being only about steps, Ginga is the subtle motion of the torso, hips, and weight transfer that allows partners to move smoothly together. It creates the signature feeling of Kizomba—grounded, relaxed, and connected. Without Ginga, dancing can feel rigid or mechanical; with it, movement becomes fluid, musical, and expressive.Closely related is the concept of Banga, which refers to the leader’s attitude, presence, and confidence while dancing. Banga is not about arrogance but about character and style—the relaxed swagger that comes from comfort in one’s body and control of movement. A leader with Banga moves with intention and calmness, creating clarity and trust for the follower. Together, Ginga and Banga form an important part of the authentic feeling of Angolan partner dancing.
This class will focus specifically on hip mobility and movement, which is one of the foundations of Ginga. Through guided exercises, we will explore how the hips initiate movement, transfer weight efficiently, and create smoother, more natural leading and following. Improving hip mobility not only enhances the look of the dance but also improves balance, comfort, and connection with your partner. The goal is to develop a body that moves more freely so that the dance feels effortless and expressive rather than forced.
