About this Event
Recently described as Wilco meets Arcade Fire, Austin’s Kirk Smith will be appearing at Captain Quack’s Soundspace to perform his final Austin show of 2025.Kirk continues to explore the crossover between New Wave and Americana with a live band that's a who’s who of local luminaries including Jon Sanchez on guitar (Bob Schneider, Nakia) and George Duron on drums (Roky Erickson, John Wesley Harding).
Conveniently located in "not too" South Austin, Captain Quack’s Soundspacehas taken up where the beloved Strange Brew left off. There's a full bar and craft cocktail menu plus their legendary baked goods and a wide variety of coffee drinks. But the crown jewel is the room itself which is thoughtfully designed and outfitted with an appropriately modern sound system. This intimate listening room offers Kirk and the band a rare opportunity to present some of the quieter, down-tempo songs off of recent albums, IN WAVES and Ithaca. Only 75 tickets will be sold!
Kirk’s single, JULIAN (New Moon Remix), was recently “Song of the Day” hosted by Taylor Wallace on KUTX 98.9 and can be heard on the station.

Kirk Smith is a singer, songwriter, and playwright from Austin, Texas. He is best known for writing and performing, Despair’s Book of Dreams and the Sometimes Radio, an alternative musical that was produced in multiple cites around the US and won a number of awards. Kirk’s first record, Suddenly Bright Out, roared with atmospheric indie rock. His follow-up, Ithaca, was more nuanced and mature, though no less powerful an exploration of alternative rock, new wave, and folk music. The single, This Debt, stayed in regular rotation on Austin’s KUTX 98.9 for nearly a year. The new album, IN WAVES is Kirk continuing to explore the common ground between New Wave and Americana. There are hints of Father John Misty alongside Pulp and even Brian Eno. But what ties things together are the songs, and the voice. It’s not exactly crooning, but it’s close. Like Leonard Cohen and Morrisey, Kirk finds a little light in the darkness. He comes across callous at times but also comforting. When not writing songs Kirk stays busy playing sandlot baseball with your Texas Playboys, teaching Gracie jiu-jitsu, and remodeling houses.
“Smith is in fine form, belting out and whispering songs on a series of vintage microphones, and his voice can rip its way right into your heart.”The Austin Chronicle
“An artist dancing on the bleeding edge of New Wave and Americana”Spin Magazine“
Julian (New Moon Mix) finds Kirk Smith stepping confidently onto the dance floor with out losing the poetic heart that defines his songwriting.

“Singular poetry, songwriting and singing"Austin American-Statesman
“This song’s got everything: energy, heart and a unique style. It’s the kind of track that grabs me. The melody’s super infectious too.”Omnia
