Kinusaiga Workshop

Kinusaiga is a beautiful textile art form that originated in Japan and was traditionally created by repurposing pieces of silk from old kimonos. The technique involves carefully cutting fabric and tucking it into carved grooves in a foam or wooden base to create intricate, quilt-like images—without any sewing. The result is a striking piece of textured art that blends colour, pattern, and design.

While kinusaiga has its roots in traditional Japanese craftsmanship and resourceful textile practices, many modern artists also explore the technique alongside other cultural textile traditions that value storytelling, fabric reuse, and hand-crafted detail.

In this workshop, Melissa will guide participants through the kinusaiga process step by step. You’ll learn how to prepare your design, select and layer fabrics for visual impact, cut and tuck fabric pieces into your base, and finish your artwork cleanly for display. Melissa will also share helpful tips for achieving smooth edges, balanced composition, and a polished final piece.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with their own completed kinusaiga artwork and the skills to continue exploring this relaxing and creative technique at home.

Must be age 19+ to participate.
